Story County Takes Another Step Toward Mask Order

STORY COUNTY, Iowa – Story County is another step closer to having a mask mandate with approval from its Board of Health Wednesday night.

The 4-1 vote sends the proposal to the Story County Board of Supervisors, which will consider the mandate at its meeting Today.

The resolution recommends masks when six-feet of distance cannot be maintained, with a misdemeanor fine of between $65 and $650.The penalty would not include jail time.

Story County has been a COVID-19 hot spots, especially since students returned to campus at Iowa State University in Ames. The county currently has a virus positivity rate of 19.1 percent, fifth highest in the state.

The Board of Supervisors could pass the resolution into law or wait for reaction from the state, which has determined local communities can’t craft their own mask orders.
