DES MOINES, Iowa – Assistance for food is now available for residents in five counties hurt by last month’s derecho storm.
Beginning Tuesday, people in Polk, Story, Jasper, Boone and Poweshiek, could be eligible to receive benefits for purchasing food through the federal Disaster Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program dollars (D-SNAP).
Residents harmed by the derecho and following power outages can apply in-person for the aid over the next several days. Current Food Assistance recipients are not eligible to receive D-SNAP benefits.

To keep wait times to a minimum, DHS is asking applicants to apply at the site in their county of residence and to follow the schedule below based on the first letter of last names. However, persons may apply at any time during the D-SNAP application period.
