Des Moines tutor connection program growing amid pandemic

(Des Moines, IA) -- A program connecting Des Moines area families with tutors is growing. The Greater Des Moines Partnership formed DMS Tutor Connection this year, as schools closed amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Mary Bontrager says the program aims to serve adults working form home, while their children are doing remote learning during the pandemic.

She says they have around 77-tutors participating, most are college students studying to be teachers. She says it helps the college students gain valuable experience and earn some money at the same time. The program is also expanding the program to include retired and/or former teachers. She says the tutor is done either virtually or in-person in some cases. She says parents are coming up with innovative ways to share resources, and form a sort of learning "pod" to assist several families.
