(Ames, IA) -- Iowans are still snatching up popular black-out license plates. Daniel Yeh of the Iowa Department of Transportation says they've sold more than 163-thousand of the plates since they became available. He says the black-out specialty plate continues to eclipse sales of all other specialty plates. The second and third most poplar are the University of Iowa Hawkeye plates and the Iowa State Cyclone plates. He says plates benefitting the Iowa Department of Natural Resources are also very popular.
Yeh says sales of the black-out plates have generated $7.4 million for Iowa's Road Use Tax Fund.
Iowa's most recent specialty plate the "Flying Our Colors" plates is based on the Iowa State flag. Proceeds support the Iowa Flood Mitigation Fund.
