DES MOINES, Iowa -- The clock is ticking for those who haven't completed the 2020 U.S. Census.

"We, as a state, are at about 95 percent completion. But that means about one in 20 Iowans are still not counted" says Alex Hassel, City of Des Moines DSM Counts spokesperson

She says the 2020 Census filing deadline is Wednesday, September 30th.

"You can go on-line to 2020Census.gov and fill out the census--it takes about 10 minutes. It will impact the next 10 years and it's super easy" Hassel says.

She says children under the age of five were the most undercounted group of people in the 2010 U.S. Census.

"If you have a two-year-old and they don't get counted, the next time they get a chance to be reflected in our community's data for these programs would be when 12 years old. That's 10 years of funding opportunities" Hassel says.

Numbers from the every-10-years U.S. Census determine how much federal funding is allocated to schools, cities, and other local government agencies. It's also used to determine the number of seats each state gets the U.S. House of Representatives.
