Two Iowa Companies Not Penalized for Dumping Excess Pollution into Rivers

DES MOINES, Iowa - A new report says two Iowa companies have not faced penalties after repeatedly dumping more pollution into rivers than legally allowed.

The group Environmental Law & Policy Center says the companies, ADM Bioprocessing in Clinton and Gelita USA in Sergeant Bluff, informed the state of violations they've racked up since 2017 on the Mississippi and Missouri rivers.

The report blames the lack of enforcement on a cut in funding and staffing to enforce the federal Clean Water Act.

It says responsibility has fallen on states like Iowa, which have also cut budgets to enforce laws protecting lakes and rivers.
