High Fire Danger for North and Western Iowa Wednesday Afternoon

DES MOINES, Iowa - The National Weather Service says strong west winds combined with low relative humidity and dry grasses and crops will make for potentially dangerous fire conditions and spread.

Here are the essential components of the fire danger Wednesday:

  • Critical Fire Danger over portions of West and Northwest Iowa: Red Flag Warning from 1 PM to 8 PM today
  • Elsewhere an elevated fire danger will exist for today
  • Grasses and crops are nearly fully cured and will burn easily if a fire occurs
  • Strong west to northwest winds of 25 to 30 mph with gusts of 45 mph or higher this afternoon will spread any fire quickly; possibly getting out of control especially west and northwest areas.
  • Persons are urged to postpone any outdoor burning until a more suitable day

Burn Bans are in effect for the following counties across Central Iowa: Audubon, Calhoun, Cass, Emmet, Hardin, Jasper, Sac, Emmet, and Webster.
