AMES, Iowa - Story County now has a mask order.

The Ames Tribune reports county supervisors unanimously passed the mandate after it was stripped of penalties.

The original proposal carried fines between $65-and-$625, depending on the number of violations.

But the supervisors and the county Health Department agreed to scrap the penalties under legal advice from the county attorney.

The state has determined that local communities don't have the authority to enforce mask orders. Governor Kim Reynolds has continually declined to impose a statewide mandate.

Story County joins several other cities and counties that have passed mask orders without penalties. The city of Des Moines has had one in place since August.
