Iowa Secretary of State Backing Purple Thursday

DES MOINES, Iowa - Iowa Secretary of State Paul Pate is promoting participation in Purple Thursday tomorrow.

Purple Thursday is a national day where people are asked to wear purple in recognition of Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

Pate says all of Iowa's counties experienced at least one domestic violence conviction last year, with the total reaching more than 2,700.

Pate's office oversees the state's Safe at Home program, which conceals the addresses of victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, trafficking and stalking.

The program also program provides a substitute address, mail forwarding and confidential voter registration and absentee voting.

“There are more than 630 participants across the state enrolled In Safe at Home and a record number of them will be voting this year,” said Pate. “They’re able to do that without fear of their address becoming public record. This program helps save lives.”
