State Committee to Recommend Ban on Police Discrimination

DES MOINES, Iowa - A group organized by Governor Kim Reynolds is calling for police to be banned from discriminatory actions based on race or ethnicity.

The group, which includes police agencies and civil rights groups, will present recommendations to Reynolds.

They're also calling for lawmakers to enact penalties for officers involved in mistreatment, and for the collection of information on officers who treat minority and ethnic people differently.

The recommendations were agreed upon Friday, and will be presented next Thursday at the Iowa Summit on Justice & Disparities with Governor Reynolds present.

Lt. Gov. Adam Gregg chairs the group, known as the FOCUS Committee on Criminal Justice Reform. It includes representatives of the state law enforcement agencies, the NAACP and Des Moines based Urban Dreams among other organizations.

.The recommendations could be considered by lawmakers in the next session of the Legislature.
