Cedar Rapids Police Hold Drug Take Back Day

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - Cedar Rapids area residents have fewer unused medications in their cabinets after the police sponsored Drug Take Back Day.

The department set up a walk-up location for people to discard unwanted and expired drugs as part of a national effort Saturday.

A similar effort in Dubuque brought in nearly 800 pounds of unused medications and 351 syringes from 367 residents.

Police say the medicine take-back program gets potentially dangerous leftover drugs out of homes.

Most abusers of medicines, including teens, get drugs from a friend or relative, often without their knowledge and not from a drug dealer.
