Election Turns into Big Republican Win in Iowa

DES MOINES, Iowa - It was a big election night for Republicans in the state of Iowa. President Donald Trump won the state's six electoral college votes over former Vice President Joe Biden, the second time he carries the state.

Incumbent Senator Joni Ernst fended off a challenge from Democrat Theresa Greenfield to win re-election for her second term.

Secretary of State Paul Pate says Iowa has set a new all-time record for a general election by at least 80,000 votes. More than 1.6 million people have cast ballots.

Democrat Incumbent Congresswoman Abby Finkenauer in District 1 with Cedar Rapids, has not conceded the election. Her campaign manager says they're still analyzing the close nature of the vote. Results have Finkenauer down by just under 11,000 votes to Republican Ashley Hinson, who has declared victory.

In District 2 with Linn and Blackhawk counties and Iowa City and Waterloo. it's Republican Mariannette Miller-Meeks with an edge of just 282 votes over Democrat Rita Hart with all 20 counties reporting in the open Congressional seat.

Democratic incumbent Congresswoman Cindy Axne has won Iowa's 3rd district, which includes Des Moines and Polk County.. She has a roughly 6,000 vote lead with all 16 counties reporting.

And in western Iowa's District 4, Republican Randy Feenstra has the state's most decisive Congressional victory, beating Democrat JD Scholten in the open seat once held by Steve King by almost 127,000 votes.

If all the elections stand, Iowa's Congressional Districts will have moved from a three-to-one Democratidc advantage, to a three-to-one Republican advantage.

In the Iowa legislature, Republicans picked up seven House seats after Democrats had been looking to flip the House.

President Trump's roughly 7 point victory over Joe Biden in the state reflects the last Des Moines Register Iowa Poll, which showed Trump breaking out to a 7 point lead, after showing a toss-up race it its previous polls.
