Iowa Sets Record for General Election Turnout

DES MOINES, Iowa - Iowa has a new record for turnout in a general election.

Unofficial totals show Tuesday's election topped the previous high set in 2012 by almost 100,000 votes.

Nearly 1.7 million people took part in this year's general election.

That number could increase as mailed ballots postmarked by Monday will still be counted if they arrive by next Monday. Nearly 1 million absentee votes have been cast so far.

Secretary of State Paul Pate tweeted his thanks to voters, poll workers and county auditors.
