Benton School District Moving to Online Classes Wednesday Over COVID-19

BENTON COUNTY, Iowa - The Benton School District will conduct online only classes for a week starting Wednesday.

It says the move is because of staff shortages and student absenteeism from COVID-19.

The district says it'll start reviewing data every Monday, and then inform parents and staff if more time is needed before reopening classrooms.

Sports and extracurricular activities are also be canceled during the closure.

Benton Schools is disinfecting its buildings and school buses during the week of online remote learning.

Benton County currently has a COVID-19 positivity rate of 24.9 percent over a 14-day average, well above the 15 percent level where districts can ask the state for a waiver to move to remote learning. In a statement, the district did not says whether its received state authorization to do so.
