DES MOINES, Iowa -- Polk County Emergency Management says they're unsure how long it will take to restore services after a large fiber was cut near Des Moines causing some Verizon Wireless customers to be unable to call 911.
Program Assistant DeAnne Sesker says they first thought Verizon experienced a hack through YouTube that impacted around 300-Verizon sites across the country.
A few hours later, she said the Iowa Homeland Security and Emergency Management Agency and Verizon Responses Manger for Iowa said the cause was due to the fiber being cut and was only impacting those with LTE services.
"The Verizon Response Manager does not confirm that a 'hack' occurred as previously shared with us locally through another division within Verizon. Apologies if this has initiated additional concerns."
They say Gmail accounts could have also been paused.
