Racial Discrimination Lawsuit Officially Filed Against UI Football Program

DES MOINES, Iowa - A lawsuit accusing the University of Iowa football program of racial discrimination is moving forward.

Thirteen Black former players have filed the suit which names Athletic Director Gary Barta, Head Coach Kirk Ferentz and Assistant Coach Brian Ferentz, as well as two others, as defendants.

The suit accuses the football program of pervasive discriminatory treatment and harassment.

It says the players were constantly subjected racial slurs such as "dumbass black players."

The lawsuit does not include a $20 million settlement that was part of a letter from the players' attorney last month.

The players are represented by Tulsa based civil rights attorney Damario Solomon-Simmons, who has been corresponding with the university.
