City of Des Moines to Update Downtown Parking

DES MOINES, Iowa - The City of Des Moines is launching an effort to re-vamp downtown street parking with new pay stations and a mobile app.

City Councilman Joe Gatto tells WHO Radio news the city is deciding which of three models for updated pay stations it will use.

City Traffic Engineer John Davis says the new pay stations will offer residents more payment options.

He says pay stations will include instructions for downloading an app through which people can pay using their phones and receive updates on how much time they have remaining. People will also be able to pay with credit or debit cards, as well as coins.

Davis says cities like Minneapolis and St. Louis have adopted similar systems.

Davis tells WHO Radio news the new pay stations will be installed starting at the west end of downtown, eventually expanding into the East Village.

Residents should start seeing the new pay stations as soon as spring.
