Iowa Democratic Party Chair Won't Seek Another Term

DES MOINES, Iowa - Iowa Democratic Party Chairman Mark Smith says he won't seek another term.

He decision comes after Democrats underperformed expectations in Iowa on a federal and state level in this month's election.

Smith says he never intended to lead the party long term, referring to himself as a bridge to the future.

He was elected chairman in February when Troy Price stepped down from the post after malfunctions in the Iowa Caucus drew national criticism. Pete Buttigieg was eventually named the winner in the Caucus after a lengthy delay.

In this month's election, Democrats lost at least one congressional seat in the state as well as eight seats in the Iowa House. Also, Donald Trump easily won the state and Republican Senator Joni Ernst was re-elected after Democrats spent heavily in an effort to flip her seat.
