First Staff Member in Iowa Prison System Dies From COVID-19

MITCHELLVILLE, Iowa - The first staff member at an Iowa Prison is dead from COVID-19.

The death of a worker at the Iowa Correctional Institution for Women this week comes after an outbreak inside the prison system statewide.

Four inmates statewide have died from COVID-19 in the past two weeks.

The large systemwide COVID-19 outbreak has subsided in recent days, with cases Friday morning totaling about a third of what they were a week ago.

Governor Kim Reynolds said the week that conditions are improving at Iowa prisons.

There were 536 virus cases reported at prisons as of early Friday morning, after a surge to nearly 1,400 the week of November 10th.
