(Ames, IA) -- Residents of an Ames apartment building that caught fire escaped through a second story window, when they realized the interior stairs had burned. Ames firefighters were called to the building at 218 S. Dakota Avenue just after 4 p.m. Wednesday. Crews arrived and saw residents climbing out of a window. The fire department says a passerby had placed a neighbor's ladder against the building for the residents to use. One resident suffered minor injuries and was treated on scene.
Firefighters were able to put out the fire quickly. Police blocked the northbound lanes of South Dakota Avenue and rerouted traffic.
The Ames Fire Department says it appears the fire started on the outside of the structure, and caused $75,000 in damage.
