DOJ rules conditions at Glenwood Resource Center violated Constitution

A U.S. Department of Justice investigation concludes there is reasonable cause to believe that conditions in the state-run Glenwood Resource Center violated the U.S. Constitution.

In a statement, the DOJ said “The Justice Department determined that there is reasonable cause to believe the conditions at Glenwood violate the Fourteenth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution and that these violations are pursuant to a pattern or practice of resistance to the full enjoyment of rights protected by the Fourteenth Amendment."

The DOJ opened an investigation into Glenwood in 2019 after reports “harmful and uncontrolled human subject experiments” at Glenwood Resource Center. The investigation focused on increased deaths at Glenwood Resource Center and the use of restraints on residents.

Governor Kim Reynolds responded to the investigation closing with a statement, saying “What happened at the Glenwood Resource Center was unconscionable and unacceptable...I am committed to bringing all the tools and state resources needed to address the challenges at the facility."
