DES MOINES, Iowa - A man charged with Attempted Murder at the Iowa State Capitol after a rally supporting President Donald Trump is claiming Self Defense.
Twenty-five-year-old Michael McKinney of St. Charles is accused of shooting and injuring a 15-year-old girl who was standing through the sunroof of a car that backed into a pickup truck following a verbal argument.
According to a search warrant, McKinney had no direct contact with the car, but shot because he thought he was in danger.
Police say McKinney was 5 yards away from the car, a Nissan Maxima, when he shot and injured the girl on December 6th.
The 15-year-old suffered non-life-threatening injuries. McKinney remains in the Polk County Jail in a $500,000 bond.
According to the search warrant, witnesses say McKinney located and picked up a shell casing from the shooting. He later gave police a handgun and two spare magazines he had brought to the capitol.
