DES MOINES, Iowa --
Much of Iowa could close the year with a winter storm hitting the state starting early Tuesday.
"We're looking at things really ramping up during the early to mid-morning hours from west to east so, unfortunately, that may include the morning commute for many" says National Weather Service Meteorologist Allan Curtis.
He says parts of Central and Northern Iowa could see as much as four inches of snow, with some areas seeing as much as eight.
"The greatest snowfall amounts we're expecting to be north of Interstate 80, generally speaking. For a lot of those areas we're looking at four to six inches, a few spots pushing closer to eight" Curtis says.
He says the storm could start with a mix of rain, freezing rain, and sleet before changing to all snow.
"Kind of the late morning hours into the afternoon, at least some portions of Central Iowa flipping over to a wintery mix" Curtis says.
A Winter Storm Watch will be in effect for Central, Northern, and Western Iowa from Tuesday morning through Wednesday morning.
