Cedar Rapids Ice Arena Making Progress from Severe Derecho Damage

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - Progress is being made repairing the ImOn Ice arena in Cedar Rapids.

The venue's released an update thanking contractors and staff working on repairs, and thanking the public for its support.

The August derecho tore gaping holes in the roof and east wall of the arena, which is home to Cedar Rapids RoughRiders USHL (United States Hockey League) team.

The arena says it took 20 minutes to create all the damage, and months to repair it.

The venue says its most severe damage was to the Olympic side of the facility, where the entire west wall was ripped off and debris punctured the shared wall between the Olympic ice and NHL ice in several spots.

The facility has two rinks - a 4,000 seat NHL sized rink and an Olympic sized rink overlooked by an observation deck.

The arena says it doesn't have a specific timeline of when it will reopen again.
