Clive Police Release Identities of Teens Killed in Monday Morning Crash

(Clive, Iowa) -- Clive Police are releasing the names of three teenagers killed in a high-speed police chase Monday morning.

16 year-old Emmanuel Nyariel, 14 year-old Zacharia Warsame, and 14 year-old Majok Nyariel were killed in the crash. 15 year-old Hamid Lula and 13 year-old Mohamed Elzubeir were also in the vehicle at the time of the crash. Both remain hospitalized with serious, life-threatening injuries.

Police say the chase started after an Urbandale resident reported the group of teens to police a little before 2am. Police identified their vehicle as a car reported stolen last week. Officers chased the teens at speeds reaching over 100 miles-per-hour through Urbandale and into Clive.

The fleeing driver lost control of the car at a railroad crossing, causing the vehicle to veer off the road and flip multiple times. Police say they do not know who was driving the car at the time of the crash. A further investigation remains ongoing.

The Clive Police Department is extending its condolences to the family, including releasing the following message from Police Chief Michael Venema:

“Children should not die like this, and when it happens it is an unspeakable tragedy for families, friends and the community. We grieve the loss of life. Our officers involved have been deeply affected by this incident, but we know that these feelings are minor compared to the pain of the families involved.”
