Iowa braces for major winter storm

DES MOINES, Iowa -- Iowa's bracing for a winter storm that could bring a lot of snow and strong winds across the state Monday.

The National Weather Service says Des Moines could see anywhere from seven to 13 inches of snow, seven to nine in Ames, five to 10 in Cedar Rapids and Iowa City, and six to 10 inches in the Quad Cities.

They say snowfall rates may often be an inch per hour in areas of heavier snow.

The Weather Service says northeast winds gusting from 30 to 35 miles per hour will produce near blizzard and whiteout conditions and travel could be difficult to impossible at times.

Much of Iowa along and south of Highway 30 is under a Winter Storm Warning starting early Monday morning. It runs through the day Monday before ending early Tuesday morning.
