Ten to Fourteen Inches of Snow Expected in Central Iowa

1PM update: The NWS says travel is discourage across most all of central and southern Iowa as heavy snow will continue into the night.

Snowfall rates of 1-2" per hour are likely at times with widespread 6-13" accumulations from Highway 20 south to the Missouri border.

Snow totals of this magnitude are somewhat rare, only occurring once every 15 to 20 years so impacts will not be common and NW winds may gust to around 30 mph producing blowing snow and dramatically reduced visibilities.

This combination of snowfall rates and wind may produce near whiteout conditions, especially in open areas.

Multiple counties have announced tow bans and travel will likely be quite difficult if not impossible at times into tonight.

Improvement is anticipated by Tuesday morning with winds diminishing somewhat and snow ending.
