Des Moines Fire asking residents to clear hydrants

(Des Moines, IA) -- The Des Moines Fire Department's asking residents and neighbors to clear snow away from fire hydrants. This week's heavy blanket of snow buried thousands of hydrants in the city.

Lieutenant Rick Thomas with the Des Moines Fire Department says they want hydrants clear of snow so firefighters have easy access to hydrants in the event of a fire. He says they do carry shovels but would prefer to have quick access to hydrants so they don't waste any time putting out a fire.
