Des Moines City Council to Vote on Stadium Complex Monday

Des Moines, Iowa - The Des Moines City Council votes today on the sale of land near downtown for a soccer stadium complex.

The site at Martin Luther King Jr Parkway at the Racoon River would be home to a 6,500-seat stadium for a USL soccer team.

Plans also include a hotel to serve the nearby hospital and neighborhood as well as renovation of existing buildings.

The owners of Kum & Go are behind the development, and have announced plans to spend $60 million on the project.

The entire development area is proposed to consist of approximately 2.1 million square feet of new or renovated building development at a cost of $550 million.

The land proposed for redevelopment is currently assessed at $12.12 million, which includes approximately 3.8 acres of property currently owned by the City

The project would occupy the site of the old DICO property, which had been tied up in legal battles for year as its owners have fought against pollution cleanup orders.

The site was designated as a federal Superfund site.
