Fifth Armstrong, Iowa city official charged in misconduct investigation

ARMSTRONG, Iowa -- A fifth former Armstrong, Iowa city official is being charged in an ongoing misconduct investigation.

The Emmet County Sheriff’s Office says former Armstrong City Clerk Mary Staton is charged with misdemeanor counts of theft and tampering with records.

She joins another former city clerk, the current city clerk, along with the Northern Iowa town's mayor and police chief--all facing charges of embezzlement and fraud, misusing city funds, and falsifying financial records.

The charges come from a multi-year investigation led by the Emmet County Sheriff’s Office, with help from the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation.

It following a special investigation by the Auditor of State’s Office.

The Iowa Attorney General’s Office is prosecuting this case at the request of the Emmet County Attorney due to a potential conflict of interest.
