Iowa DOC Reports 19th Prison Inmate Death From COVID-19

IOWA CITY, Iowa - Nineteen Iowa prison inmates have now died from COVID-19.

The Department of Corrections says Kevin John McDonnell was pronounced dead Tuesday morning at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics from COVID-19 and complications from other preexisting conditions.

McDonnell was 63 years old, and had been serving a 25-year sentence for 2nd Degree Sex Abuse at the Newton state prison. His sentence began in 2008.

Two prison staff members systemwide have died from COVID-19 in addition the 19 inmates.
