Man in Custody in Stabbing, Arson Incident

(Des Moines, IA) -- A man is in the Polk County jail after police say he stabbed a woman and lit a southeast Des Moines hotel room on fire while high on meth.

Police say officers were called to the Hawkeye Motel late Wednesday night and found a woman with stab wounds in the parking lot and the hotel room on fire. The woman told police she was smoking meth with 54-year-old James Cason when he started stabbing her, then lit the hotel room on fire and left.

Cason later returned to the scene, where officers took him into custody. He's now facing charges of willful injury causing serious injury, domestic assault, and first-degree arson.

The woman is expected to survive.
