Pothole Season Begins in Iowa LINKS

(Des Moines, Iowa) -- Pothole season is starting in Iowa.

"We're at that time of year when they start showing up. When you have a deep freeze like we just came through, and then a quick warm up, that will cause the first wave of potholes to show up." Des Moines Public Works Director Jonathan Gano tells WHO Radio News.

His crews patch potholes year-round on 750 miles of the city's busiest roads.

"We run pothole patching crews on the snow route system, that's the roads everyone uses to get around." Gano says.

"They'll respond to individual complaints within 48 hours, we try for 24, but that's not always possible."

WHO Radio News Reporter Madeleine McCormick spent a couple of hours on Pothole Patrol Friday morning, watching drivers dodge or hit potholes on one of the busiest roads in Iowa, Fleur Drive.

"The best way I can describe what's going on is, it's kind of like a dance." McCormick says.

"So, the drivers or the cars are either dead-on hitting these potholes and going up and down.... or they're just swerving a little bit as if the pothole is their partner's foot and they need to take a little mis-step."
