By the numbers, first time weekly jobless claims are down by 531, from 5,988 to 5,457., a drop of almost 9 percent..

First time claims rose by 3 percent in the previous week.

Ongoing claims are increases by 2,634, from 46,963 to 49,597, reflecting the 5 percent jump.

Ongoing claims reached a peak in the early stages of the pandemic of more than 191,000 in late May of 2020.
