Iowa BBB: Scammers targeting millennials during pandemic

(Des Moines, IA) -- The Better Business Bureau in Iowa says they've noticed a trend that started last year during the pandemic, more millennials being duped by scammers. The B-B-B says most of the scams are online, and the average amount lost is $150 dollars.

The BBB says In 2020, adults ages 18 to 24 reported the highest median losses, pulling even with senior citizens. The younger group also saw the the highest likelihood of loss (56.6%).

The BBB says scammers have also realized millennials do not have a lot of experience with phony paper checks, the kind that come in the mail, that look legit, but are bogus. Such checks often require some sort of fee to claim the funds, and so once that's sent away, the person who received the check is not only out the fee, but phony check won't clear the bank.

Cody Huizinga of the BBB in Iowa reminds people that legit checks don't just arrive in the mail out of the blue.
