Lawsuit filed against Iowa's new voting law

DES MOINES, Iowa -- A civil rights organization is suing the state of Iowa over a new voting law.

Governor Kim Reynolds signed a measure Monday that includes provisions shortening early voting period from 29 days to 20, closes polls on Election Day an hour earlier, and mandates that mailed-in early ballots be in county auditor's offices before polls close on Election Day.

The League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) of Iowa filed the lawsuit, saying the law is an act of voter suppression.

LULAC's suit says the law violates the Iowa constitution and imposes burdens on minority, elderly, and disabled voters.

Iowa is among a number of states where Republican-majority legislatures are trying to reduce early voting, require voter ID, and tighten the requirements surrounding absentee voting.
