IOWA - Two Iowa state agencies are commemorating the one-year anniversary of the state's first COVID-19 case.
The departments of Public Health and Human Services are asking Iowans to take a picture and share on social media what the year has meant to them using the hashtag and sign: #IowaStrong.
The departments are also encouraging their employees as well as local health care workers to do the same. (#IAmIDPH and #IAmDHS and #IAmLocalPublicHealth).
Director Kelly Garcia, who heads both departments, is calling it a moment to reflect on what Iowans have endured and focus on resiliency.
“This has been a year of grief," said Garcia. "We’ve lost so much in our everyday life, including so many little things we used to take for granted. And for many Iowans, that loss may also include a loved one. This is a moment to pause and reflect on what we’ve endured together, and to focus on our resiliency. I am continually grateful to our teams at IDPH and DHS, as well as our partners throughout the state.”
The agencies are encouraging the use of three state resources to deal with the ongoing pandemic: COVID Recovery Iowa, Your Life Iowa and Vaccinate Iowa
The departments reiterated Garcia's projection that by the end of May, there should be enough vaccines available for anyone who wants one.
They're also asking all Iowans who've been fully vaccinated to continue following Center for Disease Control guidelines:
- Wear a mask or face covering
- Practice social distancing with those outside your household
- Clean your hands frequently with soap and water
- Stay home if you feel sick
- Get tested if you are exposed to, or have symptoms of COVID-19
- Get a COVID-19 vaccine when you are eligible
