IOWA - Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds could have an update on COVID-19 vaccines at her press conference Wednesday morning.
She's set April 5th as the date to open vaccines to all adults if supplies hold up, and the state is expecting delivery of doses to ramp up in the next few weeks.
Iowa's move is part of a trend as 24 states plan to open vaccines to all adults between now and May 1st, according to numbers from CNN.
The state has just passed one milestone as more than half a million people have now been fully vaccinated for the virus in Iowa.
Data from the Washington Post shows Iowa ranks 10th in fully vaccinating its population, and 18th for delivering at least one dose.
As of Wednesday morning, almost 1.3 million total doses had been administered statewide. There are roughly 2.1 million adults in Iowa.
Another subject during Reynolds Wednesday press conference could be to killing of two workers at the Anamosa State Prison.
The state announced a Corrections Department nurse and a correctional officer died from an assault by an inmate Tuesday morning.
A release from the Corrections Department said the inmate attacked multiple staff members and inmates in the prison's infirmary. Additional security staff arrived and restrained the inmate.
The names of the dead workers and the inmate who assaulted them have not been released. The state Corrections Department and the Division of Criminal Investigations are holding a news conference to release more details at 3 pm Wednesday in front of the Anamosa State Penitentiary.
Governor Reynolds release a statement on the killings:
“Today, our state grieves the loss of two public servants who were attacked while on duty at the Anamosa State Penitentiary,” said Gov. Reynolds. “My prayers and deepest condolences are with their families, friends, and colleagues as they begin to cope with this senseless tragedy. We will exhaust every available resource to deliver justice to those who committed this act and bring a sense of closure and peace to the victims’ families.”
In addition to event in Iowa, Governor Reynolds has ordered state flags to be flown at half-staff until sunset on Saturday to honor and remember the victims in this week's mass shooting in Boulder, Colorado.
