Investigation Underway On Accident That killed Two ISU Crew Club Members

AMES, Iowa - An investigation is underway into a boating accident that led to the death of two crew club members from Iowa State University Sunday.

The university Police Department and the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office are looking into the accident at Little Wall Lake, while the school is conducting an internal review of policies and procedures.

Issues being looked at include wind speeds on the lake and whether life jackets were or should have been used.

The names of the student's involved in the accident will be released after family members are notified.

Iowa State President Wendy Wintersteen said the community is "heartbroken" over the tragedy.

“The Iowa State community is heartbroken to learn of this tragic accident at Little Wall Lake," said Wintersteen. "At this time, we are focused on providing support to club members, their families and friends. We ask that everyone keep them in their thoughts during this very difficult time."

Three of the five students involved in the accident were rescued from the water and treated and released from Mary Greeley Medical Center. A dive team recovered the body of one student Sunday, while the body of the fifth person was recovered Monday morning.

ISU Senior Vice President for Student Affairs Toyia Younger released a statement Monday:

“We extend our deepest condolences to the families and friends of the two students we lost on Sunday. During this time of grief, I ask the entire Iowa State community to show compassion and support for one another. We know there are a lot of questions and we are working to provide answers, but this will take time."
