Flags in Iowa at Half-Staff Through Tuesday to Honor U.S. Capitol Victims

DES MOINES, Iowa - Governor Kim Reynolds is ordering all flags in Iowa to be flown at half-staff until sunset on Tuesday to honor victims of last Friday’s attack at the U.S. Capitol.

The governor’s order is in conjunction with President Joe Biden’s proclamation to lower all U.S. flags for the same length of time.

One U.S. Capitol Police officer, William Evans, was killed and another injured after a man drove a car into a security barricade at the Capitol complex.

Flags in Iowa were previously flown at half-staff through March 29th to honor prison workers killed during an escape attempt.

"We mourn the loss of Capitol Police Officer William 'Billy' Evans and I send my prayers and deepest condolences to his family, friends, and loved ones who are left to grieve following this horrific act of violence,” said Governor Reynolds. “The state of Iowa will never forget the sacrifices made by the brave men and women of law enforcement who willingly put themselves on the line to protect the innocent and uphold the rule of law.”

Flags will be at half-staff on the State Capitol Building and on flag displays in the Capitol Complex. Flags will also be half-staff on all public buildings, grounds and facilities throughout the state.

Individuals, businesses, schools, municipalities, counties and other government subdivisions are encouraged to fly the flags at half-staff for the same length of time.
