(Ames, IA) -- Anybody getting a new driver's license in Iowa is now required to get a "Real ID".
According to Darcy Doty with the Iowa Department of Transportation, it includes anybody coming into Iowa from out of state, or Iowans seeking to get a state driver's license - such as teenagers who are just beginning to drive.
"Then it is required at that time," said Doty.
Real ID will be mandatory on new licenses by October 1st.
It'll be required by the federal government for domestic air travel, and for gaining entrance into buildings such as U.S. court houses.
People will still be able to renew their existing Iowa licenses without getting Real ID.
The Real ID act became law after the nine-eleven terrorist attack.
Obtaining a Real ID driver's license require a person to present a certified birth certificate (a simple copy of a birth certificate is not sufficient) or a valid passport.
A social security card will also be required when a person appears at a driver's license office seeking a new Iowa license.
