(Clive, Iowa) -- The City of Clive has awarded several Des Moines area residents with life-saving awards for their actions earlier this year.
On February 1st, Rob Newberry collapsed and suffered sudden cardiac arrest during an exercise class at Genesis Health Club in Clive. Rob’s classmates and Genesis staff took immediate action that helped save his life.
Clive Mayor Scott Cirksena presented awards to the following individuals for their heroic actions:
- Rob Brown, trainer at Genesis Health Club—secured automated external defibrillator (AED) on-site
- Clover Sisamouth, club member—called 911 and provided detailed information to assist responders
- Kylie Johnson, club member and nurse—performed CPR
- Michael Irlbeck, club member and off duty Windsor Heights Police Officer—performed CPR
- Haley Bryant, club member—applied AED
“On behalf of the entire Clive community, we thank these women and men for their heroism,” said Mayor Cirksena. “A community is the product of actions taken by thousands of individuals each day. Our community is stronger today because these individuals took action that saved a life and protected a family. We are grateful for their service.”
“Sudden cardiac arrest is a life-threatening situation that strikes people of all ages and who may seem to be healthy,” said Clive Fire Department Chief Rick Roe. “Chances of survival increase dramatically, though, when people like the individuals we’re honoring today know what to do and take quick action. It’s an honor to recognize them for their heroic acts. We also thank Rob and his wife Dawn for sharing this day to recognize those who worked together to save Rob’s life.”
“Having the right training and equipment at your business for quick intervention can be the difference between life and death” said Chief Roe. “We’re grateful that Club Manager Marques Rodgers and the entire Genesis Health Club team was well prepared for this situation.”
