Des Moines Man Charged With Starting Apartment Fire

(Des Moines, Iowa) -- A Des Moines man is in custody after police say he started an apartment fire earlier this month.

Police say Curtis Giovannte poured gasoline inside the hallway of the apartments at 1302 E. Watrous Avenue and set it on fire. No one was injured in the fire, but it caused significant damage to the building and displaced several families.

Surveillance video shows Giovannte filling up a gas can at a nearby Quick Trip minutes before the fire was set. Des Moines Police say an officer recognized Giovannte boarding a DART bus, and took him into custody on an outstanding warrant.

Giovannte is facing arson charges. Police say he did not give a reason for allegedly starting the fire.
