Hoover High School to Host Mega Scrub Event Saturday

(Des Moines, Iowa) -- Hoover High School will host the first Mega Scrub event of the season this weekend. The school's parking lot will be full of large dumpsters that Des Moines residents can fill with waste from spring cleaning or home projects.

The event will run from 7a.m. until 1p.m. Saturday and is open to Des Moines residents only. Proof of residence will be required to participate. Des Moines Public Works will offer four Mega Scrub events this season as well as smaller, monthly Scrub events from March through November.

The list of items you can throw away at Saturday's Mega Scrub event includes:

  • Aerosols
  • Acids/Bases
  • Antifreeze
  • Batteries: Rechargeable mercuric-oxid (button batteries), nickel cadmium (NiCd), lithium (Li), nickel-metal hydride (NiMH) or car batteries)
  • Cell phones
  • Cleaners, drain and liquid cleaners
  • Fertilizers
  • Floor care products
  • Gasoline and kerosene
  • Glues
  • Light bulbs: high efficiency only: SFLs, ballast, high intensity discharge
  • Motor oil
  • Oil filters
  • Oven cleaner
  • Paints: Oil based only. 
  • Petroleum-based adhesives
  • Pesticides
  • Poison
  • Pool chemicals
  • Roofing tar
  • Rust removers
  • Sharps: must be contained in detergent bottles or sharps containers (not milk jugs or pop bottles). Lids must also be taped.
  • Shellac and stains
  • Thermostats/thermometers
