Iowa Moves Up on List of States with Lowest Unemployment Rates

(Des Moines, Iowa) -- Iowa is moving up on the list of states with the lowest unemployment rates in the country.

The statewide unemployment rate stayed at 3.7 percent in March, according to Iowa Workforce Development. That puts Iowa tied with Kansas for the country's fourth lowest unemployment rate.

Nebraska, South Dakota, Utah, and Vermont are tied for the nations lowest overall unemployment rates at 2.9 percent.

The state of Iowa added over 15 thousand jobs in March. The largest gains were in construction, manufacturing, and hospitality.

Iowa Workforce Development says construction added the most jobs in March, likely due to extreme cold winter temperatures putting many projects on hold in previous months.

Food Services and hospitality jobs are also expected to increase as COVID vaccines are more widely distributed and social distancing protocols are relaxed.

Over 1.5 million Iowans are employed across the state, an increase from February.
