Iowa Close to Allowing Home Delivery of Alcohol Through Third Parties

DES MOINES, Iowa - Iowa may soon allow home delivery of alcohol by services such as Uber Eats.

Lawmakers have passed a bill to allow third party delivery of alcohol from restaurants and grocery stores to homes.

Those businesses are currently required to supply their own home delivery service, which most do not have.

The bill now goes to Governor Reynolds, who previously let bars and restaurants sell carry-out cocktails during the peak of the pandemic.

Iowa then became the first state to formally allow cocktails to go.

The House passed third party delivery of alcohol by a nearly unanimous margin. The Senate passed the measure Wednesday 39-7, with some Democrats concerned about which part would be liable for accidents involving alcohol.

The bill requires delivery services and retailers to have written agreements before third-party alcohol delivery would be allowed. Those agreements would be overseen by the state's Alcoholic Beverages Division.
