Des Moines Airport Traffic Way Up in April, Adding More Nonstop Flights

Des Moines International Airport

DES MOINES, Iowa -- Airport traffic is up significantly as more people feel comfortable flying.

The Des Moines Airport Authority says April 2021 passengers went up 1,210% from April last year, when they saw traffic dip the most from the pandemic.

Airport Communications Manager Kayla Kovarna says traffic is still down from pre-pandemic levels.

"We typically in a normal time have about 50% leisure, 50% business traffic. Right now, we're seeing the leisure come back and the business is a little bit slower, it's trickling back," said Kovarna.

The airport's latest April 2021 report is just the beginning of the return to air travel. The Des Moines airport is adding more nonstop flights to it's summer schedule.

The airport will soon offer 25 nonstop flights to destinations like Atlanta, Austin, Denver, Vegas, Miami, Phoenix, and a few more.

Kovarna says it's the most they've offered, ever.

"Right now, what we're seeing is a lot of folks wanting to get away to Arizona, Colorado, Florida, places they can go with their families, their friends, and spend some time outside."

The July travel schedule will have the latest additional nonstop flights available.
