DES MOINES, Iowa - An Iowa State Representative says a conservative Washington political group had nothing to do with a new voting law in the state.
A video leaked by the left leaning news organization Mother Jones features Heritage Action Executive Director Jessica Anderson taking credit for crafting the law
"Iowa is the first state we got to work in, and we did it quickly, and we did it quietly," said Anderson in the video. "Honestly, nobody noticed."
Republican Representative Bobby Kaufmann says he had no contact with Heritage Action, and the group had nothing to do with the law.
Kaufmann sponsored the measure, which Democrats have strongly criticized, claiming it adds unnecessary restrictions to voting in Iowa.
In the video, Heritage Action takes credit for drafting legislation in several states that have passed election laws this year that change voting procedures.
Kaufmann rejected her claim that Iowa lawmakers used model legislation from Heritage.
The left-leaning group Progress Iowa says it's filing an open records request, saying "the Governor and Republicans in the legislature must release every bit of communication they’ve had with the Heritage Foundation, so we can know the truth about their work with this shadowy group.”
