Man Accused of Killing State Patrol Sergeant Jim Smith Pleads Not Guilty

(Black Hawk County, Iowa) -- The man facing charges in the death of an Iowa State Trooper last month is pleading not guilty.

Court documents show Michael Lang's attorney filed the not guilty plea paperwork on Sunday and notes that Lang is requesting a speedy trial. Lang is facing multiple charges, including first-degree murder, in the Grundy Center standoff that led to the death of Sergeant Jim Smith.

Police say on April 9th, Lang barricaded himself in his house and fired repeatedly at officers trying to end the standoff, shooting and killing Smith in the process.
