Iowa School Districts Deciding Whether to Continue Student Mask Mandates

IOWA - Iowa School districts are making decisions on whether students should still wear masks for the rest of the school year.

The state Health Department says masks in schools should be optional after the Centers for Disease Control last week said vaccinated people no longer need to wear them.

In central Iowa, a vocal group of students and parents demonstrated outside Ankeny schools against masks, while the district decided to leave its requirement in place Monday night.

Most major central Iowa districts are also choosing to leave their mask orders in place for the rest of the year, while leaving options open beyond that point.

In eastern Iowa, masks are optional in the Center Point Urbana and Solon districts.

But the Linn-Mar district in Marion is keeping its mask requirement in place, despite getting pushback from some parents. Linn Mar says its choosing to listen to Linn County Public Health and keep masks.

Meanwhile, the Waterloo district says it'll likely continue to require masks because the school year is so close to being done.
